Fall is my absolute favorite season to make time for picnics. The way the sun hits the earth and trees feel like a big hug to me! The unique charm of this season makes being outside more enchanting than ever. Here are some creative fall picnic ideas along with some of my favorite locations to enjoy them.
Stargazing Picnic at Kennebec Pass, La Plata Canyon
Kennebec Pass in La Plata Canyon offers the perfect setting for a stargazing picnic. You will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to the top of the pass! Not only do
you get 360 degree mountain views at the top, but the drive is full of waterfalls and changing leaves. The high elevation and isolated location provide incredibly clear night sky views, making it ideal for astronomy enthusiasts. Transform the back of your truck bed into a cozy nook! Pack a thermos of hot cocoa, some warm snacks, and your favorite constellation app or map for a magical evening under the stars.
Full Moon Picnic at Little Molas Lake
A full moon picnic at Little Molas Lake is an unforgettable experience. Picture yourself enjoying gourmet s'mores and sipping old fashions by the shimmering lake, illuminated by the full moon. The serene waters and the moonlight create a tranquil atmosphere that's perfect for a romantic date or a peaceful night with friends. Don’t forget to bring a cozy blanket and some lanterns to set the mood. Fall full moons for 2024 are
Sept 17 & Oct. 17.
Hiking Picnic at Hovenweep National Monument
I believe food and nature experiences are the best ways to disconnect from life and practice being present. For those who want a day to disconnect, a hiking picnic at Hovenweep National Monument is a must. Located on the cliffs outside of Cutthroat Castle Trailhead, this spot offers breathtaking views and a sense of history. After a rewarding hike, settle down on the cliffs with a hearty picnic. The ancient ruins and scenic vistas make it a unique and inspiring location. Hovenweep is a 1.5 hour drive from Durango, but it's a fun drive and you can stop by Mancos's Absolute Bakery on your way!! My fav!
Boho Create and Sip at Haviland Lake
Combine creativity with leisure at Haviland Lake with a Boho Create and Sip picnic. Gather your girlfriends for an afternoon of crafting and sipping wine by the lake. Bring along your favorite water colors, adult coloring books, or sketchbooks, and let the natural beauty of the surroundings inspire your creations. Adding fresh flowers and lowkey music helps complete the bohemian vibe.
More Favorite Picnic Spots

2. Twilight Lake at Purgatory: Rent paddle boards from Durango Board & Boat and enjoy a picnic on the water. The calm lake and scenic backdrop make it a great spot for both adventure and relaxation. I would
recommend hiking Purgatory Flats trail before your picnic.
3. Junction Creek: A lovely area with a creek-side setting, perfect for a quiet picnic. The sound of the flowing water adds a soothing ambiance to your meal. There are some great picnic spots just a short walk from the trailhead parking making it easy to bring your comfy picnic items. I recommend visiting this spot during a weekday.
4. The Tribute Garden overlooking Lake Nighthorse: This garden offers stunning views of Lake Nighthorse and is a perfect spot for a sunset picnic. The panoramic views make it an ideal location for a casual evening. This is not a well visited spot and you will likely have the place all to yourself. Bring fluffy blankets or pillows to sit on.
